What is a LDAP server?
The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) refers to an application protocol wich allow access to a directory service ordered and distributed to search any information in a netowrk. LDAP may be considered as a database (altough his storage system could be different) over which consults could be made..
A directory is a set of objects with attributes organized in a logical and hierarchic way. A more common example is the telephone directory, that consists of a series of names (people or organizations) that are ordered alphabetically, with each name having one an attached direction and telephone number.
Habitually, it stores the information of authentication (users and password) and is used to authenticate itself although it is possible to store another information (data of contact of the user, location of diverse resources of the network, permissions, certificates, etc). To synthesis way, LDAP is a protocol of access unified to a information set on a network.
